What If I Have No Experience?

What do you mean, you have no experience? Everyone has experience! You had experience five minutes after you were born – experience of having lived five minutes on this earth.

But yes, employers frequently want a specific type of experience – for instance, five years’ experience with Photoshop, or two years’ experience in a child care setting. The job descriptions often sound pretty inflexible about it. But before you conclude there’s no sense in applying for that job and prepare to move on down the list, take a moment to think about what you really might have to offer after all.

If you enjoy taking photos and manipulating images digitally, you may have used a “lite” version of Photoshop, with many of the same features as its bigger, bolder cousin. If you’ve used your imaging software a great deal and achieved some pretty cool effects, you’ve demonstrated you have at least an aptitude for that type of work. So should you lie and say you are the city’s Photoshop guru? Of course not. But it would be fair to tell a potential employer that you are proficient in a less demanding imaging software – show some samples of your best work -- and stress that now you’re eager to learn more complex software.

The same holds true for child care. No, you may have never worked in a day care setting before, but you babysat the neighborhood children for years, and you’ve taught Sunday school. Use your neighbors or your clergyperson as references!

These “transferable” skills you’ve picked up through ordinary life experience can serve you well in a job interview. Sound confident, as if you have not a doubt in the world that you are qualified for this job, and your new employer may overlook your “lack of experience” in favor of potential and enthusiasm!
